I've had a busy past few days in Copenhagen so today (Sunday), I'm going to relax and take it easy before starting work tomorrow. I have already done some preliminary research work, since I have already visited several sites. It should make the week a little less hectic, as my research schedule is pretty grueling.
The weather has been perfect, warm and sunny, and I've had a good time walking around, exploring the city. The night I arrived, it was a beautiful evening, so I did Rick's self-guided walk of the old town, ate some take-out and watched the sunset from the harbor near the royal palace. I've been staying at the Cab Inn, one of several in the city, which are big, pre-fab, inexpensive hotels with small, cruise-ship like rooms. My room (the cheapest) can supposedly hold up to 3 people but I can't imagine cramming that many in here, waaay too tight. The bathroom is pretty small, with a shower head in the ceiling. There is a shower curtain, but the whole bathroom seems to get wet when I shower. For $100 per night, you can't beat the price. It's clean, very central (a few blocks from the train station) and has t.v., free WiFi Internet and a decent breakfast. They have larger, more expensive rooms as well, which would be better for a couple.
Everything seems to be more expensive here. Hotels, food, and esp. alcohol; a beer in a bar is about $8. Luckily, I'm not a big drinker, so won't blow a lot of money on booze. One of my tasks for research is to find cheap and inexpensive places to eat as well as free sites and activities to do in order to save money. For instance, going to a supermarket and buying things for picnic and eating in a park or square, watching a free concert. Even with the high prices, it's a great place to travel. Very clean, organized and efficient. Bikes are almost as plentiful here as in Amsterdam. Everyone seems to ride them, and bike lanes are everywhere. Friday morning I took a 3-hour bike tour of the city, which was a great way to see it. We visited the main sites such as City Hall Square, the royal palace, Nyhavn, and of course, the statue of the little mermaid. Tomorrow I will rent a bike for the rest of the week and use it to get around while doing my research.
